Alarms and missions
How do I set an alarm?
Open the Alarms tab and tap New alarm (the + button). Choose the time and the days it repeats, add a label if you like, choose a mission, and tap Save. Wakeward needs permission to schedule alarms: iOS asks during the first-run screens, or tap Allow alarms in Settings > Reliability centre. Allow it, because without it no alarm can ring. With it, a Wakeward alarm rings even in Silent mode and Do Not Disturb.
How does the mission work?
When the alarm rings, tap Start mission to open Wakeward and finish your mission. Finishing it cancels the backup alarms that were waiting. If you stop the alarm without finishing the mission, a backup alarm rings again. You can switch the mission off for an alarm (Mission to switch it off), which makes it a plain alarm: Stop turns it off, with no backups.
Can I just stop the alarm?
Yes. The Stop control of iOS is never blocked, and Wakeward cannot block it. What Wakeward does is plan backup alarms in advance, so that if you stop the alarm without finishing the mission, it rings again. Wakeward plans the backups for your next alarm each time it runs (when you open it, stop an alarm or finish a mission).
How long does the alarm keep coming back?
That is the "Comes back for" setting in the alarm: 6, 10, 16 or 20 minutes. The default is 10 minutes. It is how long the backup alarms are planned for.
What if I cannot do the mission?
When an alarm's mission is on screen, the Emergency stop is always at the bottom: hold it for 3 seconds (after 6 failed tries or 10 minutes a tap is enough), then confirm. It cancels the remaining alarms and is recorded as a skip. If a scan or photo mission has 3 failed tries, or a shake, walk, scan or photo mission is not done after 2 minutes, or the camera or motion sensor is not available, the mission screen also offers a math mission instead.
Which missions are there?
- Math: solve a few sums (free).
- Shake: shake the phone until the count runs out (free).
- Scan a code: get up and scan a QR code or barcode you registered, like the one on your toothpaste (Plus).
- Walk: walk a number of steps. The phone can stay in your pocket (Plus).
- Photo: get up and photograph a spot you registered, like the kitchen counter (Plus). The comparison runs on your iPhone.
You can try every mission without setting an alarm: on the Missions tab, tap Try it now. The difficulty (easy, medium or hard) sets how many shakes or steps you need, and how many sums and how hard they are.
How do I register a code or a photo?
On the Missions tab, tap Register code or Register photo. For a code, point the camera at any QR code or barcode, then give its place a name. For a photo, you take three photos with the camera: the spot, the same spot again, and somewhere else. Wakeward uses them to check that the spot is distinctive enough, and keeps only the first as your reference photo. If the app says the places look too much alike, choose a spot with more detail.
Why can't I set a snooze or choose a sound?
Wakeward alarms use the system default sound, and there is no snooze. The alarm editor shows both.
If an alarm did not ring
What should I check?
- Ring check: the Alarms tab shows a Ring check at the top. It shows how many alarms are armed (for example "Ring check ยท 2 of 2 armed") only when alarms are allowed and every alarm you switched on is armed with iOS; otherwise it names what needs attention. Open the Reliability centre (Settings tab) for details, and tap "Check and re-arm now".
- Permission: in the Settings app, tap Apps, then Wakeward, and make sure Alarms is on.
- Volume: alarms use the ringer and alarm volume (Settings app > Sounds & Haptics). Wakeward cannot raise it for you.
- Hidden or locked app: do not hide or lock Wakeward with Face ID, because iOS cannot ring alarms of hidden or locked apps.
- Alarm limit: iOS limits how many alarms an app can schedule, and backup alarms count. Switch off alarms you do not need.
- Battery: for an important alarm, charge the phone overnight. The Reliability centre shows whether Low Power Mode is on.
Alarms are scheduled with Apple's AlarmKit and rung by iOS. As with any alarm, check the Ring check before you sleep.
Free plan and Wakeward Plus
What is free?
One alarm, the Math and Shake missions, and Try it now for every mission. An alarm that already exists always rings and can always be stopped, switched on or off and edited, with or without Plus.
What does Wakeward Plus add?
Unlimited alarms and the Scan a code, Walk and Photo missions. Wakeward Plus is a yearly subscription with a free trial for new subscribers, a monthly subscription, or a one-time lifetime purchase. The price in your currency is shown in the app before you buy.
What happens to my alarms if Plus ends?
Nothing is locked or switched off. Your existing alarms keep ringing with the mission they have. Plus is only needed to create more alarms and to choose a Plus mission for an alarm.
How do I restore my purchase on a new iPhone?
Sign in with the same Apple Account, open Wakeward, go to the Settings tab and tap Restore purchases.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Wakeward and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period (or of the free trial) to avoid the next charge. In Wakeward, Settings has a Manage subscription button too. A lifetime purchase does not renew.
Your data
Is my data private?
Wakeward has no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and does not send your alarms, photos or results anywhere. Read the Privacy Policy.
How do I delete an alarm or my data?
Open the alarm in the Alarms list and tap Delete alarm. To remove everything, delete the Wakeward app: iOS removes all of its data from your iPhone.
